What is Asbestos Removal

Asbestos Removal

If you’re not sure what asbestos abatement is or if you might need it, we are here to help. Unfortunately, there are many homes that are at risk of asbestos, especially if they were built before 2000.

If you are having your home refurbished or reconstructed, the risk of asbestos always has to be considered so that your home is healthy and secure for everyone.

Asbestos removal is also sometimes just needed when you have had asbestos in the past and now you want to make sure everything is being properly managed.

Removing Asbestos Safely

Everyone who removes asbestos has to go through proper training to ensure that they are not exposed to the asbestos as they remove it. Some of the fibers can go into the air when they have not handled properly which can be very dangerous to everyone that is around.

When asbestos fibers are inhaled they can cause many different issues including lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. All of these things are caused because asbestos fibers becoming stuck in the lungs. They can also move to the abdomen and the heart.

Asbestos Abatement

If you think you might need asbestos abatement, there are a few things the team will need to check out before determining if it’s needed or not.

Some of these things include:

  • Type and amount of asbestos that is in the home
  • How old is the building is
  • The project or refurbishment that you want to be done
  • The condition of the materials that currently have asbestos

When you get asbestos abatement done, it means that you need to have a complete workup done of all the construction and refurbishments taking place when you are in a home or building that was built before 2000.

Most of the time, teams and contractors will not do certain things at home until they have done an asbestos check as tearing things down and taking things apart when there is asbestos present can be dangerous for all parties involved.

You also need to be clear with the asbestos team and company exactly what you want to be done so they can be sure to give you the right pricing estimate.

For example, if you have a clinic, you can’t just tell the company that you want asbestos abatement done. You need to tell them the exact rooms of the building that need to be completed whether it be the waiting room, a surgical room, or the main office room where the doctor sees patients.

Asbestos removal is just one part of the asbestos. If you already have confirmed asbestos, you can remove it, but sometimes the entire area needs to be checked, demolished, and reconstructed. Our teams in Snowshoe and Buckhannon can help.

Asbestos Management

Asbestos abatement is the term used for all asbestos services to ensure your home or workplace does not have asbestos and that it is a safe environment for everyone there.

If you are using abatement or removal services as part of asbestos management, the services and money will differ depending on how much asbestos is present and how long it will take to remove it.

Some of the most common items that will need to be checked and removed for asbestos management include:

  • Plasters
  • Siding
  • Electrical breakers
  • Ceiling tiles
  • Caulking
  • Sheetrock
  • Millboard
  • Concrete
  • Cement sheeting
  • Wiring

The reason why these items usually contain asbestos is that they were used as part of a thermal insulator in schools and other public buildings. The asbestos coating was applied to many different things to make them fireproof.

This was most common in the 1970s and 1980s which is why all homes and buildings completed before 2000 are usually checked for asbestos since they can be hiding in different places.

Once it has been confirmed that there is asbestos, you will need a professional team to come in and remove it.

Removing Asbestos

When handling anything with asbestos, you want to make sure you are not inhaling it or getting it on you. Asbestos fibers are more easily airborne if the material is damaged or broken. There is no safe level of asbestos exposure, so even if you only breathe in a little, there can be serious consequences.

Never try to remove asbestos yourself. Only allow a team of professionals to come in and do it for you. All professionals are highly trained and they also know to follow state and federal regulations when it comes to asbestos removal.

You can find asbestos removal guides only for those that try DIY, but this is not recommended. You can end up exposing yourself and once exposed, it will be too late to do anything.

How to Test for Asbestos

If you think there are materials with asbestos where you live or work, never touch them or attempt to move them. Call a company even if you are not sure whether the material is asbestos or not.

An inspector can test the material and see what you are dealing with. They can also tell you if there are any hazards you need to be aware of. They can remove parts of the material and then send it to a lab for further testing. All materials will then need to be removed if they are found to have asbestos.

Removing Asbestos

Before removing the asbestos all HVAC units need to be turned off so that they do not blow fibers around the room. All the working area needs to be sealed off so that the area does not become contaminated. You can seal the area with plastic sheets.

Make sure the team is taking all the materials and putting them in containers that cannot leak. They should also mark the containers with what is inside. All team members should also wear aspirators and uniforms that cover all areas of their skin.

When finished, the workers should change into a room far from the working area and then put fresh clothes on. All dirty clothing needs to be placed in airtight bags.
